💡 Depending on your business, it may be useful to offer your customers the option of making deposits or investments via bank transfer. This process has no limit on the amount and, unlike bank cards, helps prevent the risk of chargebacks.

How it works

Once the bank transfer payment (or Money-In) is activated, we provide you with an IBAN shared with all our partners, as well as a matching code. This is generally composed of the name of your platform, followed by the external ID of the beneficiary's payment account in the format MATCHINGCODE-IDEXT. This code must be indicated on your website or application at the time of payment to allow us to credit the transfer to the correct payment account upon receipt .

Noticed

Some banks do not recognize the dash "-" in text matching. In this case, we recommend simply leaving a space between ENVIRONMENTMATCHINGCODE and IDEXT.

When your customers submit a transfer request through their bank's website or app, they will need to provide the following information:

  • Beneficiary Name : Lemonway
  • Beneficiary IBAN  : the IBAN that we will have provided to you
  • Beneficiary bank BIC code (if applicable): the BIC code we will have provided to you
  • Description  : the matching text in the format we will have provided to you (maximum 35 characters): MATCHINGCODE-IDEXT

When a bank transfer is received and credited to the beneficiary's payment account, a transaction with the status "Success" is automatically created in your platform (Type = Incoming / Method = Transfer / Status = Success) and the Lemonway commission is charged. 👉 Learn more about commissions here

In most cases, Lemonway's delays or inability to credit the incoming transfer to the beneficiary's payment account are due to the following causes:

  • The KYC status of the beneficiary payment account (e.g., KYC1/amount limit exceeded) does not allow us to credit the received transfer to the beneficiary payment account
  • The beneficiary payment account/external ID does not exist in your platform
  • Your platform name appears in the transfer description, but your client does not mention the external ID of the beneficiary payment account
  • There is no mention of your platform name or the external ID of the beneficiary's payment account, which prevents us from associating the received transfer with your platform
  • The issuer name is different from the account holder name.

In the first 3 cases, you will receive a list of pending transfers by email every Tuesday and Thursday . If you wish to add or remove a recipient, please send us a ticket.

Main statuses of bank transfers

Bank transfers can display one of the following statuses:

  • ✅  Success: The transaction was successful and the amount is credited to the beneficiary payment account, increasing the account balance
  • If the transaction is incomplete, it could not be credited to the beneficiary payment account and it will not appear in the Dashboard.

Ensure the speed of transfer credit procedures

Lemonway automatically verifies that the identity of the sender of a bank transfer entering your platform matches that of the holder of the destination payment account (excluding e-commerce, marketplace and factoring activities for the debtor - no verification required).

For an incoming transfer to be automatically credited to the destination payment account on D+1 (D = banking business day of receipt by Lemonway), it is essential that:

  • The transfer was issued by a bank account held by the holder of the beneficiary payment account (except in the case of joint bank accounts - see below).
  • The transfer label contains the reconciliation code (MATCHINGCODE-IDEXT).

In any case, the account must be KYC2 before your customer can use it.

Special cases

Joint accounts

As of September 1, 2023, Lemonway will no longer allow joint accounts to be created to open payment accounts with Lemonway. See this article for more information.

Noticed

Sometimes the bank issuing the transfer doesn't provide us with certain information about the account holder. Therefore, we may ask you for proof of transfer stating the names of both account holders, the date, and the amount (this information must correspond to the transfer in question). 👉 See our article on KYC for more information.

Transfers issued by a company

A transfer issued from a business bank account can only be credited to a payment account held by a legal entity. For verification purposes, you may be asked to provide the originating bank account number to verify that it is a business account.

Transfers issued by a sender without a payment account

In this particular case, you have two possibilities:

    1. If the payment account has not yet been upgraded to KYC2 (verified customer) status and has never received any payment flows: rename the account and provide the necessary KYC documents
    2. Create a new payment account in the name of the transfer sender and provide the external ID of the payment account to be credited.

If we have not received any contact regarding a pending transfer within 3 months, it will be returned to the sender .

Unidentified and uncredited transfers

For a joint account or a transfer issued by a company, we will email you a list of transfers received and pending crediting (twice a week), along with the action/decision expected from you in order to properly credit the funds. You can request to receive the list of pending transfers daily. 👉 Contact our Client Success team to learn more.

💡 Returned transfers are billed according to the terms stipulated in your contract. If bank transfer is not included in the payment methods provided in your contract and you would like to activate it, 👉 contact us.

Refund a bank transfer

How does it work?

When the payer's bank transfer qualifies as a  SEPA transfer  (standard or instant) according to our eligibility rules, you can request an automatic refund.

  • Via API  : Use the Refunds endpoint to initiate your refund.
  • Via your Dashboard : Submit your refund directly from your Lemonway Dashboard.

Once approved, funds will be returned to the payer within  2-3 business days .

If the transfer is not eligible for an automatic refund , you must make an outgoing transfer. Detailed steps are available in our article on outgoing transfers .

This refund feature applies to all bank transfer products, including:

  • Standard bank transfers
  • Virtual IBAN transfers
  • PayByBank transfers

Eligibility Rules

A deposit by bank transfer is refundable only if all of the following conditions are met:

  1. The debtor's name is registered with Lemonway.
  2. The debtor's bank account number is known.
  3. The debtor's BIC/SWIFT code is provided.
  4. The initial payment was sent by the payer either as a standard SEPA credit transfer or as an instant SEPA credit transfer .
  5. The deposit was recorded in the partner's system within the last 365 days .
  6. The Money-In transaction is marked as Completed , and no part of it has already been refunded or reversed via a chargeback.

💡 If any of these conditions are not met, the refund request will be denied and you will receive an error explaining why.

Refund options

Lemonway customers have access to the following reimbursement types:

  • Full Refund : The full amount of the original Money-In transfer is refunded.
  • Partial refund : Only part of the original amount is refunded.
  • Multiple Refunds  : Multiple partial refunds may be issued, as long as their total does not exceed the original transaction amount.

Request a dedicated IBAN

Depending on the volume of incoming transfers you receive, it is advantageous to use a Lemonway bank account with a dedicated IBAN.

The dedicated IBAN (i.e. a bank account in the name of Lemonway, but whose details are not shared with other partners and which only you know) allows you to:

  • Maximize the amount credited  : incoming transfers sent by your customers without mentioning the name of your platform (and which would therefore be impossible to identify in accounts shared with all our partners) are never “lost” and are returned to the sender.
  • Improve credit processing times : Bank transfers received on dedicated bank accounts are processed with priority. Unlinked or pending transfers are notified to you twice a week, allowing you to take prompt action (for example, if the KYC status of the beneficiary payment account is incorrect) to credit the payment account more quickly.

💡 From now on, you benefit from a dedicated IBAN account for new signatories. If you would like more information or if you would like to change your account type (you did not choose a dedicated IBAN account when signing your contract), 👉 contact us .

Ibanization of payment accounts

We offer the possibility to associate an IBAN with a payment account. This virtual IBAN remains in the possession of Lemonway . A virtual IBAN can only be associated with one payment account. Once you have generated this IBAN and sent it to your customer, he or she will be able to make a transfer using these bank details and upon receipt, the transfer will be automatically credited to the payment account, subject to normal processing times of banking institutions.

Ibanization allows you to:

  • To avoid pending transfers, since the transfer was sent to a virtual IBAN associated with a payment account (which will always be the payment account to which the transfer will be credited).
  • To streamline your transfer reception processes and those of your companies
  • To limit exchanges concerning transfers to be credited
  • No longer having to provide an external ID
  • To accelerate the rapprochement

💡 You can offer some of your customers virtual IBANs . Credits by bank code matching remain possible, since the two processes are compatible
